Quotes

Mowgli: I am of the jungle. Their lair is my lair. Their trail is my trail. Their fight is my fight.

Filming Locations

Sherwood Forest, Lake Sherwood, California, USA
(India)

Hollywood Center Studios - 1040 N. Las Palmas Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
(Studio)

This was the first film for which original soundtrack recordings were issued. Previously, when record companies released music from a film, they had insisted on re-recording the music in their own studios with their own equipment. The "Jungle Book" records were taken from the same recordings used for the film's soundtrack, and their commercial success paved the way for more original-soundtrack albums.

Sabu never starred in any Indian movies, and was only in British, European and Hollywood films. He was lined up to star in Indian films, but could not get a valid work permit, because he was a naturalized US Citizen, (even though he was born in India). However, to this day, many people still regard him as an Indian movie star.

Rudyard Kipling's two Jungle Book anthologies comprise fifteen stories, four of which were used in this film: "Mowgli's Brothers," "How Fear Came," "Tiger! Tiger!" and "The King's Ankus."

Although this movie was set in India, the production was actually shot in California, USA.

Although Mowgli speaks to several jungle animals, only the two snakes, Father of Cobras and Kaa, respond in English. As two of the few models used to represent the animals, they were easier to control and slower than the real ones.

Continuity

When Mowgli is escaping from the city after being whipped, the whip marks disappear from his back.

Mowgli's sarong differs in length throughout the movie.

When Mowgli goes to buy the knife and is accosted by Buldeo, the position and angle of the Buldeo's rifle changes between shots. When the camera is on Mowgli, the rifle is higher than Mowgli and points to his chest; when seen from behind Mowgli, the rifle is held lower and points more to Mowgli's belly.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

Kaa states that cats do not like water; therefore, Shere won't follow Mowgli through water. However, tigers do like water, so it should not be surprising that Shere follows Mowgli when he jumps into the water.

Revealing mistakes

Despite a comment by a villager about "running naked" through the jungle, Mowgli can be seen wearing a pair of briefs when he first enters the village and is pursued by the villagers.

When the thieves enter the chamber, a bunch of gold coins fall on the head on one of them yet he doesn't react in pain.

When the thieves are entering the treasure chamber, the first thief sits beside a large granite rock and begins running his hands through the gold coins. As he does so, his knee bumps the rock and it moves, showing that it is clearly just a lightweight prop.

Two scenes with the Black Panther were obviously shot with the panther behind a glass screen, likely as a safeguard to protect the actors. In both scenes, showing close-ups of the panther, debris is seen adhering to the glass.

All of the backgrounds are obviously painted.

Errors in geography

Spotted hyenas and black bears are not found in India.

When Mowgli and Mahala find the King's Palace, there is a South American monkey in a tree.

Character error

The actors pronounce "Mem-sahib" (lady) the way it is spelled - "mem-sa-hibe", whereas anyone who has been to India knows that it is pronounced "mem-sahb."
