Plot Synopsis

Jesse is puzzled why his friend, state police murder supervisor Captain Healy, asked him along on a 'non-stakeout' outside Sir's nephews's teen sax teacher and lover's home in Boston. Suddenly a man shoots at them, wounding Jesse only in the arm, Healy in serious surgery, but both pull through. The municipal council, already displeased Stone isn't full-time available and refuses to hire the mayor's in-law as IT consultant or man an unfair speed limit trap, suspends him pending further investigation, leaving Luther in charge ad interim. Against Healy's orders, he 'privately' looks into the case, suspecting it ties in with mob-organized prostitution, seeking help from 'moralistic' crime baron Gino Fish. Meanwhile Gammon refuses to drop the seemingly hopeless case of the mother of 'little boy Blue', who received an anonymous letter 'your son is loved' after TV hashed up his death five years ago, so Jesse starts coaching her search, which uncovers a further tragic twist.

Quotes

Rose Gammon: What are you thinking?
Jesse Stone: I was thinking, if I ever get kidnapped, I hope you're on the case.

Filming Locations

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

This is the first Jesse Stone movie not based on a novel by Robert B. Parker.

This is number 5 in the series of made-for-television films featuring Jesse Stone.

This movie was filmed in 2007 shortly before Tom Selleck joined Las Vegas (2003), but it did not air until 2009.

This movie marks the first time in a "Jesse Stone" movie where someone was not murdered or 'shot and killed' on-screen.

Tom Selleck and Jessica Hecht both played recurring roles in Friends.

Continuity

When Leaf breaks the glass in the door, the shot from the interior shows it completely out, whereas the exterior shot shows part of the glass still there.

Factual errors

Jesse uses a quarter to call 911 from a payphone. 911 calls are free.

When Jesse Stone opened the envelope received from the Mom of the kidnapped infant the handwriting on it is completely different to the hand writing of the note. The note itself looks flawless though is that the envelope has suffered enough.

Revealing mistakes

In the opening scene, the gunman stands perpendicular to the car on the driver's side and fires, blowing out both the driver side and passenger side windows. Yet somehow two holes appear in the center of the front windshield, an impossible angle.

When Jesse and Capt. Healy were shot in the car, the shooter was on the driver?s side and shot through the driver?s window. The next shot from inside the car show gunshots through the windshield and they are round holes, as would be the case of shots fired from a straight ahead position. Any shots fired by the shooter that might have hit the windshield would show as long narrow slots, if the windshield had not shattered from the angle of the shots hitting it. Also Capt. Healy showed a chest wound in the hospital, again the shot would have had to have been shot from the front of the car. All his wounds would have been in his left arm or the left side of his body.

When Sidney is interviewing Jesse about the shooting and asks him where his round that didn't hit the shooter go. He says, "Into a brick wall." But during the shooting, the camera angle of Jesse firing shows he would have had to miss by several feet to hit the wall. It is much more likely the round went down the alley and into the open street beyond.

When Jesse enters the office and speaks to Rose about the missing baby, the clock on the wall reads 8:35. A full two minutes later when he leaves, the clock still shows the same time.

Miscellaneous

After the shooting, Jesse wakes up while the shooter is approaching the car. Jesse should have waited until the shooter was closer to the car. He would have been better off to pretend he was unconscious until the shooter was in range, and then blast him.

Errors in geography

A bus from Boston to Albuquerque would likely go from Amarillo, Texas to Albuquerque. That area is flat desert, not hills, trees and not usually fog. The "Welcome to New Mexico" sign is not the standard state sign either.

Plot holes

The kidnapper of the baby renamed Eric leaves her own already-dead baby Eric in the desert with the kidnapped baby's hospital bracelet to make his mother believe he died after being kidnapped so they would stop looking for him. However, it turns out the kidnapper's original dead baby has both a birth and death certificate after living only one day in the hospital. No hospital would simply give a new mother of a dead baby the body to dispose of, and if she had stolen it there would have been an investigation to coincide with the kidnapping, which would have led to an immediate conclusion. Finding the birth and death certifications helped Rose close the case, but introduced implausible circumstances.
